Downpipe, midpipe or exhaust: what is the difference?
People use these words loosely, and shops often use them differently. Here is a simple guide to what each part is, where it sits and what it replaces.
The path of the exhaust gas
Think of the exhaust as one long pipe. Gas leaves the engine and moves through it in this order:
- The turbocharger
- The downpipe
- The midpipe
- The rear section, which most people call the exhaust
Each part has a job. Changing one affects the parts next to it.
The downpipe
The downpipe is the first section after the turbocharger. It carries exhaust gas out of the turbo and into the rest of the system.
An aftermarket downpipe replaces the factory one. Some versions include a catalytic converter and some do not. Ask which type you are looking at.
Many cars need a tune after a downpipe is fitted. Some will show a check-engine light without one. This is the part where it matters most to ask before you order.
The midpipe
The midpipe is the middle section, between the downpipe and the rear section. It often holds a resonator or other parts that shape the sound.
An aftermarket midpipe replaces the factory middle section. A midpipe swap is often a simpler job than a downpipe. If you are not sure whether your car needs anything else, ask first.
The exhaust (rear section)
The rear section is the part you can see at the back of the car. It includes the silencers and the tips.
When people say "exhaust", they often mean this section. Sometimes they mean the whole system. Always check which one a listing is talking about.
Changing the rear section changes the sound that reaches the outside of the car. Some rear sections have valves. Our guide to valved and straight-through exhausts explains what that means.
What a full system is
A full system combines all three: the downpipe, the midpipe and the rear section. It is built to work together as one set.
Some owners change one part at a time. Others change the full system in one go. Neither is right for everyone. It depends on your car, your budget and how you use it.
How to choose
Start with what you want to change.
- You want to change the flow near the turbo: look at downpipes.
- You want to change the middle of the system: look at midpipes.
- You want to change what the car looks and sounds like from outside: look at exhausts.
- You want all of it: ask about a full system.
Then check three things.
- Fit: parts are made for specific models, so the model and chassis code matter.
- Use: some parts are for road use and some are for off-road and track use only. Check the rules for your own car with the RTA or your insurer.
- Tune: ask whether your car will need one.
